(Column Chess)

By Gerd P. Degens

The game requires a 9 x 9 board. The pieces are bound to columns; this applies to ranks 3 to 7. The binding corresponds to the placement of the pieces on the respective base lines. For example, the a-file (ranks 3 to 7) is reserved for rooks, the d-file, for example, contains queens. There is no morphing on the e-file. On ranks 2 and 8 there are only pawns, so that it is possible to promote the pawns on the base lines.

Setup

Pieces

Standard set of pieces. Details in the rule section.

Rules

Except for the following changes, the Fide rules apply.
There is no capturing en passant, castling and promotion of pawns takes place.
Bare king loses. Stalemate is a win.

___________________________________

The pieces move as in standard chess.

There is no morphing on ranks 1 and 9, i.e. the pieces there retain their identity.

Ranks 2 and 8 are reserved for pawns, i.e. all pieces on ranks 2 and 8 become pawns.

Ranks 3 to 7 retain their basic identity; the a-file only knows rooks, the b-file knights, the c-file bishops, the d-file only queens etc.

There is no morphing on the e-file.
